featuring new, classic and rare movies, pre-release screenings, dark literature,
live silent film soundtrack performance, Halloween dress-up, give-aways and more.
The majority of the movie selections will have their South Africa / Africa premieres at the Horrorfest,
This year will have only cinema shows, no virtual on-line chapter.

OPENING NIGHT ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
For two decades the South African HORRORFEST team has given Cape Town it's most fun and exciting Halloween event at the Labia Theatre, covering all things spooky. From movies, short films, documentaries and literature, to live silent film soundtrack performances, Halloween dress-up, old school 16mm film projections and a whole lot more.
To celebrate this two decade milestone, the HORRORFEST will have a special opening night on Halloween eve (Wednesday 30 October), not only for special guests, media and filmmakers, but also a limited amount of public tickets.
An amazing birthday cake from SWEET LION HEART will be the centerpiece, with HAUTE CABRIERE / PIERRE JOURDAN champagne on arrival, DEAD MAN'S FINGERS rum, and for those who need a boost, SLAYER ENERGY drinks!

After 50 years THETEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE is still striking terror into viewers around the world! Join us for a special screening to celebrate this half century milestone on Halloween Night at our 20th South African HORRORFEST.
A group of teenagers fall victim to a deranged family of cannibals in the Texas backwoods, in this gritty and intense Tobe Hooper movie - introducing the world to one of Horror's most noticeable and feared characters, the chainsaw wielding Leatherface.

For almost half a century the cult classic musical film the Rocky Horror Picture Show has thrilled audiences around the globe. Still as irresistibly fun and fresh as always, the phenomenon is still going strong. Join us at the 19th Horrorfest with an audience participation screening (the best, if not only way to experience the movie!) - For those not bringing their own, or those unaware of all the extras to bring along (from slices of toast, rice, newspapers, rubber gloves, playing cards etc.)

DANTE'S INFERNO (L'INFERNO)
Classic silent film live soundtrack performance by The Makabra Ensemble One Cinema Show Only
This amazing piece of cinematic history from 1911 is the first ever Italian full length feature film!
Adapted from "Inferno", the first canticle of Dante Alighieri's "Divine Comedy", this groundbreaking film classic chronicles Dante's travel through the Circles of Hell, guided by the poet Virgil.
This will be the 14th film re-scored by The Makabra Ensemble with a new original soundtrack - performed at the HORRORFEST's Labia Theatre home, featuring very special guests Sara Eksteen and Maxim Starcke.

A fascinating documentary on Indonesia's undisputed scream queen, who starred in 42 classic movies, was hailed as 'The Queen of Indonesian Horror' and crowned 'Asia's Most Popular Actress'. Discover the enigmatic horror star best known for portraying vengeful spirits from Indonesian folklore, demons whose supernatural retribution are widely believed to have influenced her controversial life and mysterious death.
Through exclusive interviews with family, colleagues, filmmakers, and historians, as well as clips from her classic films, director David Gregory unearths the legacy of the Indonesian Scream Queen who has begun to emerge as one of the most compelling feminist icons in cinema history.

50 years on from the making of The Wicker Man (1973), director Robin Hardy's lost papers come to filmmaker son Justin. Enlisting his brother Dominic, they journey to discover the complex nature of independent filmmaking and fatherhood. Justin's view of the film is tainted because it robbed him of his father, his home and his mother too. Dominic is more distanced, his experience relating more to the film's subsequent cult status. The sons can ask: what was Robin Hardy's creative contribution to The Wicker Man? Viewers may not always like what the brothers find, but will come closer to understanding the evolution of one of cinema's most famous cult classics, and the maverick director behind it.

Set during the World Cup final between Argentina and Holland in 1978, against the backdrop of a military dictatorship. A group of torturers breaks into a home and kidnaps a group of young people before taking them to a clandestine detention center. They turn out to be part of a macabre cult guided by an unknown supernatural force and the secret jail will become hell itself.

Classic 1932 film projected from a 16mm film print One Cinema Show Only
This legendary and controversial movie will get a special 16mm film projection.
Released 92 years ago(!), Freaks was originally intended as a vehicle for Lon Chaney, and is set amongst the backdrop of a traveling French circus and follows a conniving trapeze artist who joins a group of carnival sideshow performers with a plan to seduce and murder a dwarf in the troupe to gain his inheritance. However, her plot proves to have dangerous consequences. The film is based on elements from the short story "Spurs" by Tod Robbins.

One of the HorrorFest highlights.
The Makabra Ensemble consists of a collection of diverse musicians, creating new soundtracks
to classic silent films, performing it live beneath the big screen! It always coincides with the Halloween dress-up competition, which we'll do via the Facebook group.
With Covid seating restrictions, updates will follow on how this will be handled.
We always try our best to get interesting local and international filmmakers, authors or anyone who can enhance
the festival experience to attend as guests and interact with the audience via Q&As, signings and more.
Past guests have included Resident Evil franchise producer-director team Paul W.S. Anderson and Jeremy Bolt (UK / USA),
documentarian & lecturer Calum Waddell (UK), Cosmesis special make-up FX master Clinton Smith (ZA),
actor Rob van Vuuren and the cast from SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE,

ABOUT THE SOUTH AFRICAN HORRORFEST
In 2004 Paul Blom and Sonja Ruppersberg decided to rectify the issue of the absence of a dedicated Horror event in South Africa.
The first S.A. HorrorFest (then also known as the Horror Festacular) launched in 2005.
Besides being a Horror / Chiller / Thriller film festival (screening feature films and short films from around the world),
from the start it made a point of expanding into a broad Halloween event by incorporating
new live soundtrack performances to classic silent films by The Makabra Ensemble,
the Bloody Parchment literary chapter, Halloween dress-up competition, a night market and more.
