This classic 1920 silent film from the German Expressionism era celebrates its centenary!
The movie features the new soundtrack performance by The Makabra Ensemble from the group's live performance at the 2007 South African HorrorFest (visuals of the performers included on-screen).
At a carnival in Germany, Francis and his friend Alan encounter the crazed Dr. Caligari. The men see Caligari showing off his somnambulist, Cesare, a hypnotized man who the doctor claims can see into the future. Shockingly, Cesare then predicts Alan's death, and by morning his chilling prophecy has come true - making Cesare the prime suspect. However, is Cesare guilty, or is the doctor controlling him as more mysterious atrocities unfold?

A misogynistic photographer discovers for the first time in his life the joys of loving a woman, this one confused about her self-identity and self-esteem, by helping her in her perceptions of herself with his photographic retouching skills.
One day, middle-aged photographer and retouching artist Kai encounters Kyoko, a beautiful woman and model with a huge and ugly scar on her body. She asks Kai if he can erase the scar in her photographs of herself and create a perfect and flawless body by his retouching skills. Kyoko is fascinated by her new perfect looks in her photographs. At the same time, she is hesitant to show the world and her fans her ideal figures as in her photographs or to show her real self, scars and all. She is torn between the two selves and falls into confusion. Kai feels that only he can salvage Kyoko from her anguishes, and he is determined to love her at all costs, even if it means death to him.
WOMAN OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS” is a film that depicts the fascination and the passion in this encounter between two people awakening for the first time, to love and empathy.
To love oneself requires more effort than to love another human being. For two years the Italian region of Marche had some serious happenings: the 2016 earthquake, the murder of Pamela Mastropietro, the fascist terrorist attack by Luca Train,i and the antiracist demonstration of 30,000 in Macerata. During this time and place the misadventures of Marco take place, the victim of a car accident.
"After the previous choral movie - with an enormous amount of locations, editing cuts and actors - we’ve chosen, to avoid mannerism, to work in a totally new way: a few locations, 3 main characters, quiet rhythm, attention to the suggestions and to the atmospheres, with a macroscopic work upon the power of the off-screen."
This visually fascinating movie is hard to define - not a straight "horror", but an visually striking analysis of a very horrific situation... It focuses on the surroundings of the post-crash Marco lying helpless in an isolated area, the film adopting a pre-existent genre, and for the first time totally subverting its structural foundations.

The 1989 sequel is as much gory and hilarious fun as its predecessor (some would argue it's even better!) Here Melvin (aka Toxie) still protects the citizens of Tromaville from evil, including the nasty Apocalypse Inc. (including stopping a barrage of goons from destroying his girlfriend's school for the blind).
Toxie also ends up on a quest, traveling to Japan to meet his father, but the Tromatons in his body keep reacting to evil, forcing him to bash the culprits' heads and ripping off limbs!

ABOUT THE SOUTH AFRICAN HORRORFEST
In 2004 Paul Blom and Sonja Ruppersberg decided to rectify the issue of the absence of a dedicated Horror event in South Africa.
The first S.A. HorrorFest (then also known as the Horror Festacular) launched in 2005.
Besides being a Horror / Chiller / Thriller film festival (screening feature films and short films from around the world),
from the start it made a point of expanding into a broad Halloween event by incorporating
new live soundtrack performances to classic silent films by The Makabra Ensemble,
the Bloody Parchment literary chapter, Halloween dress-up competition, a night market and more.
