STRANGE JOURNEY: THE STORY OF ROCKY HORROR - not to be missed! > BOOK CINEMA TICKETS HERE
For half a century the cult classic musical film the Rocky Horror Picture Show has thrilled audiences around the globe. Still as irresistibly fun and fresh as always, the phenomenon is still going strong.
Join us at the 21st annual Horrorfest for the 50th anniversary audience participation screening (the best, if not only way to experience the movie!) - For those not bringing their own, or those unaware of all the extras to that go along with it (from slices of toast, rice, newspapers, rubber gloves, playing cards etc.), The LoveCraft Experiment / Love In Vein will have a stall outside the cinema where you can purchase participation packs.
The rousing party atmosphere of this gem will light up the Labia Theatre, the audience encouraged to arrive dressed as any of the Rocky Horror characters, or anything wild, exotic, crazy, or Halloween-related.
Confident directorial debut from the co-writer of A Serbian Film, Aleksandar Radivojevic, approaching the genre from a whole new direction.
A pregnant woman receives a phone call that changes everything—and threatens both her and her unborn child’s lives.
Yelena is joyfully expecting her first child, only 37 days to go, then she answers an unknown call. On the other end of the line, a chilling voice delivers an impossible ultimatum: obey his gruesome demands or watch her unborn baby die.
At first, she questions whether the caller is real or a figment of her unravelling mind, but the eerie, supernatural proof he provides leaves no doubt -- he has power over her in ways she cannot comprehend. Forced into a brutal game of cat and mouse, Yelena, unprepared for violence but desperate to protect her child, must navigate a bloody odyssey of murder, chaos, and fear.
As the body count rises, so do the stakes, and with every step, she is drawn deeper into a nightmare where survival means becoming something monstrous herself.
DER GOLEM

An Emperor’s Decree
A Creature Spawned as a Saviour
But at what cost?
THE MAKABRA ENSEMBLE will perform a new original soundtrack live to the screen, with special guests Sara Eksteen, Maxim Starcke and Nerine Dorman.
In 16th century Prague, Rabbi Loew (Albert Steinruck) interprets an alignment of stars as a sign that disaster is about to befall his city. The following day, Emperor Luhois (Otto Gebühr) bans Loew's people from Prague, prompting the rabbi to build a statue, known as the Golem (Paul Wegener), that he hopes to animate as a savior. Brought to life by an evil spirit, Astaroth, the creature is, at first, gentle and compassionate. That, however, quickly changes as the creature goes insane.
This is also the official Horrorfest Halloween dress-up night with prizes, so let's see what you've got for the spirit of the spooky season!

When the Crew of the starship Amberstar answer a distress call in deep space, they have no idea what kind of nightmare awaits.
Crafted in the spirit of Roger Corman classics like Galaxy of Terror, Forbidden World, and Humanoids from the Deep, this tribute to classic 70s and 80s genre films features practical effects a whole lot of DIY determination.
This fascinating documentary explores the grisly history and pervasive legacy of the Grand Guignol Theatre. Produced, directed and edited by award-winning filmmaker David Gregory and narrated by horror icon Barbara Steele.
Occupying a former chapel in a seedy Pigalle alley, Paris’ Théâtre du Grand-Guignol first welcomed audiences to witness its unflinchingly horrific and naturalistic stage plays in 1897. During the next 65 years of gruesome performances, the ‘Theatre of Death’ developed a distinct brand of drama so sadistic yet brilliant, it captivated the world well beyond its final bow. Today the theatre’s name remains synonymous with macabre plots, and its legacy – from the modern horror genre to tabloid journalism, the true-crime phenomenon and beyond – continues to have a profound impact on popular culture worldwide.
Other documentaries by David Gregory include several screened at previous Horrorfest installments, like:
LOST SOUL: THE DOOMED JOURNEY OF RICHARD STANLEY’S ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU, BLOOD & FLESH: THE REEL LIFE & GHASTLY DEATH OF AL ADAMSON, and SUZZANNA: THE QUEEN OF BLACK MAGIC
Barbara Steele is best known for her roles in movies like BLACK SUNDAY, THE PIT & THE PENDULUM, THE GHOST and David Cronenberg’s SHIVERS.
After the death of her sister, a woman is visited by a man looking to solve a series of murders by a motorcycle maniac. As their shared fear grows, the killer's rampage continues, leaving them both questioning who the real monster is.
(Actor Matthew Ninaber is known for his role as the title character from Psycho Goreman, and director Gabriel Carrer’s For The Sake Of Vicious screened at the Horrorfest in 2020)
Starring Kristen Kaster, Shashe Ormond, Matthew Ninaber
Directed by Gabriel Carrer
At the heart of this intimate documentary lies a timeless love story between controversial artist Joe Coleman and his muse and wife of 25 years, Whitney Ward.
Known for his intricate portraits of serial killers and outlaws, Coleman now tackles his most challenging subject yet — a nearly seven-foot portrait of Whitney, the woman who has supported him through decades of artistic exploration into society’s darkest corners.
Also features Iggy Pop, Asia Argento, Dave Navarro,
Directed by Scott Gracheff
Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror is a joyful and wild ride through the tale of the cultural juggernaut that is The Rocky Horror Picture Show. From humble origins as a London fringe theatre play to its meteoric rise, fall and resurrection as the biggest cult film of all time, this is the definitive story of the Rocky Horror Show.
This in-depth documentary on the legendary rock opera smash turned cult movie phenomenon comes to you on the 50th anniversary of the movies original release in 1975.
For those attending the South African Horrorfest audience participation screening, you know what an experience it is, but here you get a look behind how it all got started as a scrappy little show in London which grew to take over the world’s midnight screenings and become a timeless cinema experience for many generations past and many to come (we foresee it to still be as relevant when it celebrates its centenary in 2075!)
Directed by Rocky Horror creator Richard O’Brien’s son Linus, it features all the key Rocky Horror cast and crew, including director, producer, music director, O’Brien, Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick and more.

Starring Peter Dinklage (Game Of Thrones, Knights Of Badassdom), Elijah Wood (Lord Of the Rings,
Sin City), Kevin Bacon (Tremors, Footloose), Jacob Tremblay (The Predator, Room)
Directed by Macon Blair (Green Room, Blue Ruin, I Don't Feel at Home in This World )
In this wild Heavy Metal monster flick a struggling all female metal band called “The Virginia Bitches” gets ripped off by a concert promoter. On the way to their next show they come across a young girl in serious peril. Seeking help, they encounter a cannibal cult headed by an infamous warlock, but a surprise awaits them when they find out the girls have a specific taste for blood...
This creature-filled, action-laden black humoured movie is loaded with practical special make-up effects, features BUTCHER BABIES vocalist Heidi Shepherd, and a heavy soundtrack to match!
If all goes to plan, director Scott B. Hansen will be flying in from the USA to attend the screening and chat about his movie. Hansen's previous movie BAD CANDY (feat. Slipknot’s Corey Taylor) screened at a previous Horrorfest.

ABOUT THE SOUTH AFRICAN HORRORFEST
In 2004 Paul Blom and Sonja Ruppersberg decided to rectify the issue of the absence of a dedicated Horror event in South Africa.
The first S.A. HorrorFest (then also known as the Horror Festacular) launched in 2005.
Besides being a Horror / Chiller / Thriller film festival (screening feature films and short films from around the world),
from the start it made a point of expanding into a broad Halloween event by incorporating
new live soundtrack performances to classic silent films by The Makabra Ensemble,
the Bloody Parchment literary chapter, Halloween dress-up competition, a night market and more.
HorrorFest organizers Sonja & Paul at the Zombie Walk, with their boy Zoltan
